England national football team defender Harry Maguire has been omitted from the squad for the 2026 FIFA World Cup in North America, with manager Thomas Tuchel deciding against including the experienced centre-back in his final selection.

The 33-year-old was informed of the decision ahead of England’s official squad announcement on Friday, May 22, 2026, and later admitted he was “shocked and gutted” to miss out on the tournament.

Maguire had recently returned to the national team setup in March 2026, after being recalled by Tuchel, featuring in both international friendlies during the camp.

It was his first appearance for England since September 2024, and many expected the Manchester United defender to remain part of the squad after an impressive domestic campaign.

However, Tuchel had hinted after the March camp that Maguire faced strong competition in defence, openly suggesting the defender lacked the mobility required for his preferred system. Reports indicate the England boss viewed him as fifth-choice among his centre-back options.

In a message posted on Instagram, Maguire expressed his disappointment.

“I was confident I could have played a major part this summer for my country after the season I've had,” he wrote. “I've been left shocked and gutted by the decision.”

Despite the setback, the former England captain wished the squad well ahead of the tournament.

Maguire’s omission follows his absence from UEFA Euro 2024 due to injury and could potentially mark the closing chapter of his international career.

Meanwhile, defenders such as Marc Guéhi, Ezri Konsa, Dan Burn and Levi Colwill are now expected to benefit from the decision as Tuchel reshapes England’s backline ahead of the World Cup.
