Kevin-Prince Boateng has recalled his first experience joining the Ghana national football team setup with surprising honesty, admitting he initially doubted the team’s seriousness before a major tournament run.

Boateng, who was eligible to play for Germany and Ghana, chose to play for the Black Stars ahead of the 2010 World Cup in South Africa.

Speaking about his early days around the squad, Boateng described a relaxed and playful environment that left him unconvinced about their chances on the global stage.

“When I met them, I thought we were going to lose every game in the group stage. Because we were not playing together, they were just shooting the ball around, playing football tennis, laughing, and joking,” he said.

He even singled out star striker Asamoah Gyan, recalling a light-hearted atmosphere that caught him off guard.

“Asamoah Gyan was just dancing the whole time! I said, ‘Brother, are you a professional dancer, or are you a footballer?’”

But according to Boateng, everything changed once the tournament began.

The carefree training ground mood quickly shifted into a focused, disciplined and united team when it mattered most on the international stage. He described how even pre-match routines reflected that transformation.

“But the World Cup came; the first game, I saw the people; they changed. Locked in. Everybody was ready, focused, and concentrated. We came out of the bus; everybody’s dancing. The moment we hit that field, it was a different team,” he recalled.

Boateng said that switch in mentality not only surprised him but also helped strengthen the squad’s bond as Ghana went on to deliver strong performances at the tournament.

“That’s when I looked at them and I was like, ‘Okay, we’re getting serious.’ And then we became like an even closer team because we performed really, really well,” he added.
