At the 25th remembrance of the Accra Sports Stadium Disaster, Asante Kotoko S.C. joined calls for safer football, with one speaker asking, “How many more lives must be lost before action is taken?”
But for many, that question rings hollow when the full truth is still danced around. The official commission of inquiry stated that after Kotoko conceded the second goal, sections of their supporters violently ripped out stadium chairs and threw them onto the pitch, escalating tensions and triggering the chain of events that ended in tragedy. Yet years later, some still avoid confronting that painful reality directly.
The match itself had already been politically charged — branded by many as “NDC vs NPP” — turning football into a battlefield of partisan emotions. Then came the politics after the deaths. Critics accused the government of John Agyekum Kufuor of pushing the propaganda narrative that the stadium chairs brought in by the NDC were “inferior,” while others believed the real issue was violent fan conduct, poor crowd control, and disastrous policing.
The truth is brutal: 127 innocent lives did not die because of football alone. They died because passion turned into rage, leadership failed, and politics overshadowed accountability.
May the souls of the 127 never be reduced to statistics or political talking points. They were fathers, mothers, sons, daughters, friends, and dreamers who went to watch football and never returned home. May they rest eternally in peace, and may Ghana never witness such darkness again
