Sports journalist Patrick Osei Agyemang, popularly known as Countryman Songo, has criticised the Minister of Sports and Recreation, Kofi Adams, over his refusal to reveal the salary of Black Stars head coach Carlos Queiroz.
During an interview with Asempa FM, the sports minister stated that his office is still finalising the financial details of Queiroz’s contract, despite already awarding him a four-month deal.
Kofi Adams insisted that he could not disclose the exact amount the Portuguese coach earns, but added that it would not exceed $100,000.
President Mahama hasn’t complained about Otto Addo’s sacking – Kofi Adams
Reacting to this, Countryman Songo rejected the minister’s claims, arguing that once a coach has been awarded a contract and hired, the salary must already be agreed upon and known to officials.
The Fire for Fire host on Adom TV fumed that Kofi Adams’ refusal to disclose the salary disregards President John Dramani Mahama’s promise to ensure transparency in matters relating to the national team.
“President Mahama said there should be transparency for accountability’s sake. Sports minister, you’ve given the new coach a four-month contract — how much is the money involved? If you say it is not $100,000, then you know the amount, so why are you going to check again?
"We are not kids. We want to know the salary for the four-month contract, including the bonus, per diem, and other details, which will be provided later. How can you give a contract without knowing the salary? How?” he said in Twi on Adom TV.
Countryman Songo added that the Black Stars are heading towards disaster at the World Cup if such issues are not clarified before the tournament.
“If we want the Black Stars to succeed, we should be careful; otherwise, we will disgrace ourselves and come back,” he warned.
