  Leadership is stewardship, not partisanship.
  As Regional Minister and Mayor, you are custodians of all citizens — Kotoko supporters, Hearts supporters, and fans of every other club. Kumasi and the Ashanti Region are proudly diverse in football loyalty. In fact, Hearts of Oak enjoys a significant following there. Public office demands visible neutrality, especially in emotionally charged rivalries.
  When state officials publicly align with one side in a heated contest, three concerns arise:
  1. Public Office Is Not a Fan Club Executive Position
  Cheering your hometown club privately is human. Doing so officially — with the weight of state authority — risks blurring the line between personal passion and institutional endorsement.
  2. Symbolism Matters
  In football culture, especially between Kotoko and Hearts, rivalry is intense and historic. Any perceived political backing can inflame tensions unnecessarily. Leaders must cool passions, not amplify them.
  3. Avoiding Tribal Undertones
  Ghana has worked hard to build unity beyond ethnic and regional identities. Kotoko vs Hearts already carries historical regional symbolism (Ashanti vs Greater Accra). Leaders must be careful not to reinforce narratives that can be interpreted as tribal alignment.
  4. Equal Encouragement Builds Greater Unity
  Imagine the powerful message if you had:
  Wished both teams well.
  Called for sportsmanship and peace.
  Encouraged fans across the region to celebrate football without hostility.
  That would elevate the moment from rivalry to national unity.
  5. Public Resources, Public Trust
  Even when no funds are involved, the visibility of public office is itself a public resource. It should be used to unite constituents, not to appear selective.
  Football is passion. Leadership is responsibility.
  No one is asking leaders to stop loving their clubs. But when wearing the mantle of public office, neutrality and inclusiveness should always be the jersey of choice.
  That is not condemnation — it is a call to higher leadership.
