Sampene is always remembered by the Kotoko fans for the wrong reasons. In 1986, a WAFU final match between Kotoko and Africa Sports (of CI) went to penalties in Kumasi. Kotoko scored their first three kicks. At a point they needed one of the last two penalty takers to score to win the then prestigious WAFU Cup. Sampene was the fourth player to take his kick. He missed and the referee was kind enough to order a re-take. Sampene missed again and Kotoko went on to lose the cup. It was heartbreaking for the Kotoko fans, especially when he took the penalties so poorly. And to add to the suspicion, Sampene left Kotoko and joined Africa Sports the next season.

He went into oblivion after joining Africa Sports. He was such a huge talent whose potential was never tapped. Is Maradona Sampene.
