If he holds a ghanaian passport and it's expired or close expiring he can use the passport to travel home since he is coming back to his home country...

You cannot renew a P-1 visa state side. You have to go to your home country.

Stay is different from visa validity my friend. You can have a single entry visa good for six months and the officer admits you with a five year stay.
