Nothing new here. Many fathers and indeed mothers claim trophies for races they never run. Many absentee fathers emerge out of the woodwork to claim paternal privileges when the children they neglected or walked out on achieve great fame or riches. Some mothers who never mothered their children also have a similar shameless attitude. They try to worm their way back hoping to harvest where they never sowed. Whether or not they succeed in reconnecting with their estranged children really depends on whether these hurt and traumatized children have the capacity to forgive and honor their undeserving parent. THAT IS WHAT IS CALLED SHOWING MERCY.
