Abukari wins GT marathon.

Takoradi, Sept. 9, GNA - Mr Emmanuel Ofosu-Yeboah, the physically challenged cyclist has noted that the continued neglect of people with disabilities would not assist towards the country's socio-economic development.

He said it was time for corporate bodies and the general public to devote some resources towards the development of especially the youth. Mr Ofosu-Yeboah said these at the climax of a Ghana Telecom (GT) sponsored marathon organised by ROK FM, a Takoradi-based radio station. Abukari Siedu of the Customs Excise and Preventive Service (CEPS) and Ms Esenam Torgbaja won the male and female events respectively. He said every individual has talents that could be tapped and utilised for the development of society which should not be ignored. Mr Ofosu-Yeboah said the youth needed support to fulfil their visions for the future.
Mr Francis Kpesehu of the Ministry of Education, Sports and Science said the inclusion of the physically challenged in the marathon was commendable.
He said that the continual neglect of the physically challenged did not only damp their spirits but also made them beggars in society. Mr Richie Osei Kufuor, Managing Director of ROK FM said the event forms part of the Second Anniversary celebrations of the station. He said the station would continue to develop programmes that would be beneficial to both able and physically challenged persons in the society.
Mr Kufuor said the station was also assisting some musicians and artists to unearth their talents and forge cordial relationships. Nana Kwame Gyamfi of Ghana Telecom said the company would continue to sponsor sporting activities in the country. He said the company had already voted 5.2 billion cedis for the 2006 Premier League matches.
He took the opportunity to appeal to the public to report cable thieves and other saboteurs of the company to the Police to enable them to provide satisfactory services.
The winners of the marathon were presented with a 14-inch colour television, industrial standing fan, certificates and Vega products. Mr. Samuel K. Tsebu, 66 and Ms. Amida Alhajia Ghanna, aged six were presented with prices for being the oldest and youngest participants of the event.
They also received prizes and certificates. Twenty other consolation prizes were presented to the other participants. 09 Sept. 06
