Michael Essien's performance alongside Lampard was faultless and at the end of the first half a high ball from the Ghanaian found Ballack unattended, onside and so surprised that he failed to hit the target.

Man of the match Michael Essien (Chelsea) whose hard-working, fully-rounded performance was the most satisfying part of his team's otherwise patchy display. Tireless display in the holding role. If he works on his shooting he?ll become complete player.
