Work on Sekondi stadium progressing steadily

Essipong (W/R) Oct.2 GNA - Work on the new stadium being built at Essipong near Sekondi in the Western Region towards the CAN 2008 matches is progressing steadily and barring un-foreseen circumstances the project would be handed over to the Government by September next year. Mr. L. Than, an official of the Chinese contractors, Shangai Construction Company said about 70 per cent of work on the stadium had been completed.

He said all concrete works would be completed this week while steel works for the roofing had already begun.

Mr Than said this when briefing Papa Owusu Ankomah, Minister of Education, Science and Sports when he inspected the project at the weekend. The company has about 360 workers with half of them been Chinese, he said and expressed his appreciation to the Minister for his personal assistance to regularise the stay of the foreign workers. The multi-million cedi project, which is one of the four stadiums being built to host the CAN 2008 tournament, has modern facilities that include a 40-room hotel, VIP stand, dressing rooms and press box among others. Papa Owusu Ankomah said the government was prepared to give any assistance to ensure that the project was completed on schedule and asked officials of the company to contact the Ministry whenever they face any problems. Mr. Philip Kwesi Nkrumah, Shama Ahanta East Metropolitan Chief Executive, accompanied the Minister. 02 Oct. 06
