Sunderland Sign Asamoah Gyan For Record Fee

English Premier League club Sunderland has broken its transfer record with the signing of Ghana international striker Asamoah Gyan from French Ligue 1 side Rennes.

The North East club has agreed a fee of more than £13million for the forward, beating their previous record of £10million which they paid for Darren Bent from Tottenham in 2009.

Manager Steve Bruce had been trying to secure Gyan’s services ever since the sale of Kenwyne Jones to Stoke City even before the start of the season.

The Black Cats were locked in talks for much of the transfer-deadline-day before finally securing the signature of Gyan, who was one of the stars of this summer’s World Cup finals, only around 15 minutes before today’s 6pm transfer deadline.

The 24-year-old African underwent a medical on Tuesday morning before signing a four-year deal with the club.

In a move to make up for some of the huge money paid, Sunderland have agreed to let Martyn Waghorn join Leicester in a deal worth £3million.
