Polo questions LeRoy's contract extension

Ghanaian great Mohammed Polo has questioned the Ghana Football Association’s decision to renew Claude LeRoy’s contract as Ghana coach for another two years when his current deal expires.

The former Ghana and Hearts of Oak great has been one of LeRoy’s loudest critics and says the GFA will make a mistake if it signs a two-year extension with “a man who has failed us”.

“LeRoy himself said before the Nations Cup that if he fails, he knew he would go,” Polo told KickOffGhana.com. “He failed, so the GFA should explain to us why they want to give him a two-year extension.”

The highest decision making body of the GFA, the executive council, voted unanimously last Thursday to renew LeRoy’s mandate when his current deal expires.

That overwhelming endorsement came despite the GFA itself having stated categorically that it want expected nothing but Nations Cup glory from LeRoy at the recently concluded Cup of Nations. Now though, the same body says it has enough faith in LeRoy to take Ghana forward.

Polo, generally considered the most talented footballer to have come out of Ghana, disagrees.

“With the materials we have, two years is more than enough for a coach to make his mark and build a good team. But at the Nations Cup, his selection cost us badly and over the period, he proved he does not have what it takes to make good use of the players we have in this country. We had a one in a million chance to win and then the coach blew it.”
