International Hockey Day marked in Accra

Accra, May 14, GNA - Mr Oko Nikoi-Dzani, Chairman of the Ghana Hockey Association (GHA) has called on the youth to develop interest in the game of hockey so as to be well equipped to participate in the sport.

The Chairman made the call at the celebration of this year's International Hockey Day of the Youth in Accra on Saturday. The Day, which has been instituted by the International Hockey Federation (FIH), is to sensitise the youth on the need to develop interest in the sport.

It is also aimed at teaching the youth the techniques associated with the game.

About 500 youth drawn from kindergarten, fist and second cycle institutions throughout the country took part in the celebration. Mr Nikoi-Dzani said the notion that the game of hockey is for the well to do in the society must be discarded since the game is a recreation meant for everybody to participate in. He urged the participants to combine thweir education with sports so as to remain healthy at all times.

Mrs Clara Digby, FIH Continental Development Officer for Africa said the Federation would continue to support Ghana to enable her compete favourably with others at the continental level.
