Clottey in US for fight against Mexican

Joshua Clottey continues his quest to earn another world championship date when he steps into the ring again on Saturday May 9 for a Super Welterweight clash in the United States.

Allsports.com.gh can exclusively confirm that Clottey left Ghana last week Sunday, April 26 in the company of his cherished trainer, Godwin Kotey Dzanie AKA Coach Alloway to finalise preparations for the 43rd fight of his career.

Clottey faces the challenge of 23 year old Mexican, Jorge Silva at the Minute Maid Park, Houston, Texas on the undercard of Saul 'Canelo' Alvarez versus James Kirkland bout.

Canelo had been billed to fight Clottey in December last year but the Mexican pulled out citing an injury and his camp didn't even set a new date against the hard hitting Ghanaian.

But it appears there can be no escape route for Canelo once the fights are done on Saturday with Clottey currently rated number 3, just a place behind Canelo in the WBA Junior Middleweight ratings of the title held by Floyd Mayweather.

Clottey is also rated no.8 by the WBC who rank Canelo as number one contender.

Victory for both Clottey and Canelo is reckoned to set the stage for a mega eliminator between the two for the WBA title in September, Allsports.com.gh sources have revealed.
