Ghana Football Association President Kurt Okraku has opened up on the decision to dismiss Otto Addo, describing it as a necessary step after recent performances and internal reviews.

Addo was relieved of his duties after a late-night meeting in Stuttgart, following Ghana’s 2-1 defeat to Germany.

The decision came on the back of a difficult run that also included a heavy loss to Austria, raising concerns about the team’s direction just weeks before the 2026 World Cup.

Speaking to 3Sports, Okraku said the decision was based on both what he had observed and feedback gathered over time.

“I don't know whether it's about what I saw or what I heard, or perhaps both. I've seen Otto work over time since we engaged him. I've heard millions of comments. I've seen him prepare the team for games. I've seen the last four or five games that we have played. I've seen the group; I've seen the Executive Committee discuss the games that we have played,” he said.

Okraku added that the FA ultimately felt a change was needed to align with its World Cup ambitions.

“And I've also heard about our shared vision for the World Cup, and I thought that it was time for us to look at another direction for our common vision.”

The FA confirmed Addo’s departure in a statement released at midnight Ghana time, ending his second stint in charge with just over two months to the World Cup.

Despite guiding Ghana to qualification, Addo’s tenure was marked by inconsistency, with the team struggling against stronger opposition.

Attention has now turned to finding a replacement, with Okraku indicating that a new coach could be appointed within one to two weeks.

Ghana face Mexico and Wales before heading to the World Cup, where they will meet Panama, Croatia, and England, leaving little time for the new coach to settle.
