Alexander Djiku ruled out of 2026 World Cup

Alexander Djiku will miss the World Cup through injury

Ghana have suffered a major setback ahead of the 2026 FIFA World Cup after head coach Carlos Queiroz confirmed that defender Alexander Djiku will miss the tournament through injury.

The experienced centre-back had been a doubt after arriving late to the Black Stars camp in Cardiff, with reports suggesting he was struggling with a fitness issue. Those concerns have now been confirmed by Queiroz, who revealed that the defender will be unable to take part in the Mundial.

Speaking to the media at Cardiff City Stadium on Monday, June 1, ahead of Ghana’s international friendly against Wales, the Black Stars coach disclosed that a replacement would be drafted into the squad.

“We have to make a decision and replace Djiku. Doesn't matter the players that are called. Djiku was replaced,” Queiroz said.

Derrick Luckassen to replace injured Djiku?

Djiku's absence is a significant blow for Ghana given his importance to the national team over recent years. The defender has been one of the Black Stars’ most reliable performers and was expected to play a key role at the World Cup.

His injury leaves Queiroz with an important decision to make in central defence as Ghana continue preparations for the tournament in North America.

The development could open the door for other defenders in camp, with Pafos centre-back Derrick Luckassen among the players recently linked with a possible place in the squad.
