Pafos FC defender, Derrick Luckassen has been drafted into the Black Stars camp amid growing uncertainty over the fitness of key defender Alexander Djiku ahead of Ghana’s final preparations for the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
Djiku, who last featured for his club Spartak Moscow on 24 May 2026, is reported to have arrived late at the Black Stars camp under fitness concerns, with indications that he may still be carrying an injury.
The situation has raised doubts within the technical team as Ghana continue their buildup for the World Cup in Canada, Mexico and the United States, with reports suggesting that a replacement could be considered if his condition does not improve.
Luckassen’s inclusion offers the coaching staff an immediate defensive alternative as they assess options in central defence ahead of the tournament.

The former Netherlands youth international made his Black Stars debut in 2026, in a friendly against Germany in March.
He has enjoyed a strong club season with Cypriot side Pafos FC, contributing six goals from defence and playing a key role in their Cyprus Cup triumph.
His versatility and recent form have made him a strong candidate to step in should Djiku be ruled out of upcoming matches or the final World Cup squad.
The Black Stars medical and technical teams are closely monitoring Djiku’s condition, with a final decision expected by the end of Monday, June 1, 2026.
