Oil-producing West African giant, Nigeria will in the coming days turn its attention from importing salt from Brazil for its petrochemical industry.

The country is likely to focus on Ghana for the resources due to its abundance in Ghana.

This comes after President Nana Addo Dankwa Aufo-Addo on Friday, June 12 wondered why Nigeria goes all the way to Brazil to import salt to feed its petrochemical industry when Ghana has the resource in abundance.

He said this when he assured the Chiefs and people of Ada in the Greater Accra region that he will develop the salt industry due to the benefits the nation will derive from this resource.

He explained that salt has a lot of benefits for the economy which include job creation and foreign exchange earnings, hence the need to maximize the sector.

Speaking at the seat of government, the Jubilee House in Accra on Friday, June 12 when the Chiefs and traditional leaders of Ada Traditional area called on him and appealed to him to boost the salt industry in Ghana, Mr. Akufo-Addo said salt plays a key role in the petrochemical industry.

“It brings a lot of benefit to the country in terms of the contribution it makes to the petrochemical industry.

“As you all know, salt is a special ingredient in the petrochemical products that we are hoping now to develop over our oil fields, the source of foreign exchange earnings.

“We also know what the huge market there is in our neighbour Nigeria. They are having to buy salt all the way from Brazil when we are just next door.

“Of the course the benefit that it will be for the people of Ada in terms of employment and also to the landowners the revenue that will come.

“And so there is every reason why we should put our heads together and find a way for it.”
