No more wholesale promotion for Police - IGP

Winneba (C/R), Jan. 5, GNA - Police Officers, who fall abysmally below the pass mark at various Police training courses, would be withdrawn, Mr Patrick Kwarteng Acheampong, Inspector General of Police (IGP), said on Thursday.

The IGP was speaking at the opening of the first batch of 39th Cadet Officers Course at the Winneba Police Training School. He told the 65 Cadet Officers attending the four-month course that the time of wholesale promotion of officer was gone.

Mr Acheampong said the course would equip them with the necessary knowledge and practical experience and prepare them psychologically to practise contemporary International Human Rights and Democratic Policing to meet the challenges of current policing trends of zeal and vigour. He said a number of Police Officers had attended courses at the United States Federal Bureau of Investigations (FBI) Academy and other USA Police institutions in the past four years, adding that others had also undergone the USA Department of Justice, International Criminal Investigation Training Programmes.

The IGP said the Police Administration had earmarked a number of courses in France, United States and the United Kingdom for some Officers, who would return to become instructors at the various Police Training Colleges and Training Schools.

He announced that the Commonwealth Secretariat had prepared an elaborate Human Rights Manual for African Police Forces, saying that Ghana was one of the first countries to benefit from the training package.

Mr Acheampong expressed appreciation to the Government of Ghana for its remarkable efforts to provide the basic needs of the Service and thanked France, USA and UK Embassies in Ghana for providing various equipment and training courses both in Ghana and abroad for Police Officers.

Police training courses are being held at Winneba in the Central Region and Pwalugu near, Bolgatanga in the Upper East Region because the Police College in Accra is undergoing major rehabilitation.
