Two persons intercepted by navy, community over coronavirus in Tema

Community members of Tema Manhean and the Ghana Navy have intercepted two persons believed to have sneaked into the harbour city illegally as the town and others observed COVID-19 lockdown.

This was revealed to the Ghana News Agency by Mr Frank Asante, Tema Metropolitan Public Relations Officer in an interview responding to the compliance level of the lockdown in the Metropolis.

He indicated that while the community members identified and pointed out a Burkinabe in the area to authorities, the Ghana Navy through its vigilance at the landing beaches to ensure that people did not enter the country through unapproved routes by sea arrested a Ghanaian who was sneaking into the jurisdiction from Cote D’Ivoire.

The Eastern Naval Command, the GNA learnt, stepped up its surveillance with more personnel being deployed to all beaches and landing sites after receiving information that persons from neighboring countries were entering the area.

The two were handed over to relevant health personnel for isolation and testing adding however that the test of the Ghanaian came out negative and would therefore be handed over to the Ghana Immigration Service for the necessary protocols after which he would be released.

He indicated that the Tema Metropolitan Chief Executive had announced some undisclosed incentive package for the fishermen at Tema Manhean for collaborating with the Navy to keep surveillance at the beaches to prevent people sneaking in.

Meanwhile, the Tema Metropolitan Security Council has expressed. satisfied with the compliance level on day two of the lockdown.

Head of the Council, Mr Felix Mensah Nii Anang-La, indicated that “day two has been calm and compliance is better. Security presence has increased in the communities especially Tema Manhean and Tema Central”.
