Three cities shortlisted to host 2019/20 CAF Champions League final

The Confederation of African Football (CAF) has shortlisted three African cities of Casablanca, Douala and Tunis to host the inaugural one-off final of the CAF Champions League.

The federations of Cameroon, Morocco and Tunisia were the three Member Associations that applied to have their cities considered for the final of Africa's flagship club football competition.

Cameroon's Japoma Stadium in Douala, Morocco's Mohammed V Sports Stadium in Casablanca as well as the Olympic Stadium in Tunis were put forward by their respective federations.

The three cities were put forward within the 20 February 2020 deadline set by CAF for interested countries to host the final.

A final decision is expected to be made by the CAF Emergency Committee on 12 March 2020.

The ad hoc committee chaired by CAF 1st Vice President Constant Omari Selemani will review and evaluate the received bids before the winner is announced.

The committee will be guided by the Technical Specifications that will take into consideration facilities such as infrastructure, accommodation, transportation and medical amongst others.

In what will be a historic edition of the African Champions League, the final will be a one-off match at a neutral venue instead of the traditional two-legged tie played home and away between the two finalists.

With the eight quarter-finalists all previous champions, the current African Champions League campaign promises to be one of the most memorable to date.

Last season, the final was marred by controversy over questionable officiating in the opening game between Esperance and Wydad Casablanca - while the second leg was abandoned altogether.

Amidst the VAR controversy in the clash in Tunis that resulted in the Tunisian champions retaining their crown, it was decided by the Confederation of African Football to alter the format of the competition.

Meanwhile Morocco lots set to host the final of the continent's second tier club competition the Confederation Cup.

The Prince Moulay Abdellah Sports Stadium in Rabat was the only venue that applied to host the final of the competition.

The bid winners will host the Champions League and Confederation Cup final, which will take place on 24 and 29 February respectively.
