Your reputation more important than your stomach – Aheto to leaders

Prof. Aheto Prof. Aheto

A Council Member at the Institute of Directors Ghana, Professor John Kobla Aheto, has advised leaders not to only think about their personal interests but to first build a good reputation for themselves, a practice that he says is key in corporate governance.

Facilitating a five-day seminar on "Good Corporate Governance" for journalists in the Volta and Oti regions at the Ho Technical University, Professor Aheto urged: "As a leader, your reputation is most important than your stomach", adding that good leadership is about making sacrifices.

Prof Aheto added that good leadership is about one being creative and innovative, well-informed on issues, self-motivated and willing to achieve greatness.

The former Ghana Broadcast Corporation (GBC) board member, said as a leader, one should be able to positively inspire others and always be ready to lead both "good and dangerous followers ".

On the third day of the workshop, the journalists were trained about boards and corporate leadership, as well as strategy and polices, and risk management.

Prof Aheto bemoaned how some leaders of today have lost their competencies, indicating that features such as courage, vision, and long-term focus are missing in them.

He challenged leaders, board members and entities as a whole to take risk management seriously and deal with risks head-on when they arise.

The seminar started on Monday, February 24 and is expected to end on Friday, February 28.

The participants are expected to be awarded certificates.
