Olympic Games: Ghana off to flying start in boxing qualifiers

The Black Bombers are doing well in Senegal

Despite being neglected by the National Sports Authority and Sports Ministry, Ghana’s amateur boxing team have shown they are determined to qualify for the Olympic Games after getting off to a bright start in the qualifiers currently ongoing in Dakar, Senegal.

The Black Bombers whose participation in the Africa boxing qualifiers was described as ‘not serious’ by the Director-General of the NSA got off to a blistering start, winning their opening three bouts.

Sulemana Tetteh on Thursday defeated Egypt’s Mostapha Mohammed in the men’s fly category.

Quartey Kwasi made it two victories for Ghana with victory over Mohammed Ahmed from Somalia in the men’s middle division.

In the men’s lightweight division, Kenya’s Shigali Joseph was knocked out by Ghana’s Omar Wahid.

15 amateur boxers drawn from the various gyms in the country are competing in the tournament with a resolve to book an Olympic Game spot.

Ahead of their departure last Monday, head coach of the Black Bombers said his boys are prepared to make Ghana proud.

“We keep trying to bring up the best in the boxers because we are close to the competition. We’ve gone through all the necessary technical aspect we have to go through. They are physically and psychologically ready,” coach Ofori Asare told the media.
