African Govts would pursue the path of good governance - JAK

Accra, July 11, GNA - President John Agyekum Kufuor has pledged the commitment of African governments to pursue the path of good governance and appealed to development partners to honour their commitment to Africa by ensuring timely release of aid, grants and budgetary support.

He said: "African countries will pursue the chosen path of good governance whilst our development partners would be required to honour their commitment by equally ensuring timely release of aid, grants and budgetary support", according to a statement issued by the Office of the Press Secretary to the President in Accra on Monday.

It said President Kufuor, who was the Spokesperson of the African Group of Eight to the recent G-8 Summit in Gleneagles, Scotland, "was confident that world leaders would give meaning to development undertakings announced at the Summit".

The statement said the Summit unveiled a 50 billion-dollar aid package out of which 40 billion dollars would be the cancellation of debts owed by 18 developing countries including Ghana.

According to the statement, President Kufuor in his submission at the Summit said; "there is a clear understanding of a new relationship between Africa and the G-8 Leaders and what is needed are a comprehensive plan that confirms commitment made by both parties".

On brain drain, President Kufuor reiterated the decision by the African Union (AU) that regional groupings like the European Union (EU) that benefited most from brain drain especially in the health sector should consider establishing a structured fund to support the training cost of health personnel in developing countries.
