Akosa urges Ghanaians to register for Health Insurance

Accra, July 8, GNA - Prof. Agyeman Badu Akosa, Director-General of the Ghana Health Service (GHS) on Friday called on all Ghanaians to register with the National Health Insurance Scheme to ensure quality health care.

The Director-General was speaking at the close of a three-day follow-up meeting to discuss the preparedness of the Ghana Health Service (GHS) for the take-off of the Scheme. He urged all health professionals to work together to ensure a successful implementation of the Scheme.

Prof. Akosa said though the GHS was fully prepared for the take-off of the scheme, it needed to strengthen linkages with other providers like the teaching hospitals, quasi-government hospitals and private providers to ensure maximum impact. He noted that challenges included the fact that providers were not yet formally aware of the tariff list produced by the NHIS Secretariat and the complexity of proposal forms as some set-backs to the success of smooth take-off of the scheme.

Prof. Akosa said the meeting had proposed a much simpler procedure and forms, as the current forms were too cumbersome and time consuming to complete.
