Senya Citizens Condemn Regent, Others for Court Action

Senya- Beraku C/R), Aug. 26, GNA - The regent and Acting President of the Senya-Beraku traditional council, Nenyi Anda Kwei, were on Monday asked to withdraw a legal action instituted against the district chief executive for Awutu-Effutu-Senya, Lieutenant Danny William Osardu.

The interim injunction followed the DCE's failure to attend the annual 'Akomase festival of the people held on Monday. Thousands of Senya-Beraku citizens who openly protested against the writ soon after it was announced at the durbar grounds, therefore, called for its withdrawal. Organizers of the function, made up of various associations and Asafo groups in the area, also urged Nenyi Anda Kwei and associates to render an unqualified apology to the DCE, saying he had nothing to do with the protracted chieftaincy problem in the area.

They asked the regent and his associates to rather find a means of resolving the dispute as early as practicable to pave the way for speedy development.

The people called on the government to ensure a swift settlement of the Senya-Beraku chieftaincy dispute, which is seriously hampering the upliftment of the traditional area, particularly the Senya township.

A spokesman for the Senya Youth Association, Women's Club, Senior Citizens Association, 31st December Women's Movement and the Asafo companies later appealed to the president to do all that he can to bring lasting peace and stability to the Senya people.

They pledged their unflinching support for the National Democratic Congress government and hoped the president would help them resolve the numerous problems in the area.

Mr Albert Bath Sam, Awutu-Effutu-Senya district director of the National Commission for Civic Education (NCCE), praised organizers of the festival and the entire people of the area for the peaceful manner they celebrated the festival.

He charged chiefs to use the institution of chieftaincy to mobilize resources at their disposal to develop their communities and the nation and not use it to destroy the society.

Mr Sam said the 1992 constitution does not encourage division among the people but seeks to inculcate in the citizenry a high sense of unity of purpose co-operation and mutual understanding to move the nation forward.

He asked chiefs to initiate strategies that would unite them and their subjects to enable the chieftaincy institution to regain the respect and honour it enjoyed in the olden past. Mr Sam said it is the cardinal responsibility of chiefs to inculcate a sense of fellow feeling, love, unity and patriotism in their people to help them build a harmonious society capable of improving its lot through self-help.

The MP for the area, Alhaji B.A. Sadat, asked the people to exercise restraint over their request for the rehabilitation of the Awutu-Beraku-Senya road.

He assured them that the government has already awarded it on contract together with the Obrachire-Awutu-Beraku road.
