The Bui Power Authority (BPA) has instituted an annual scholarship scheme for needy students in its catchment area.

For a start, four second cycle students have been awarded scholarships by the management of the BPA to study in any tertiary institution of their choice in the country. They were selected after a careful assessment.

They are Peter Anane Gbono, Kwame Kajansah, Thomas Shakour and Boniface Dzobo.

Each of them has also been presented with laptop computer and letters of endorsement.

Chief Executive of BPA, Fred Oware, who initiated the awards scheme, said it will empower beneficiaries to upgrade their skills and knowledge to help improve their wellbeing and society at large.

A nine-member Committee chaired by Nana Dr David Mensah has meanwhile been put in place to manage the award scheme.

Dr Mensah and other community leaders took turns to advise the awardees not to abuse the opportunity but to work hard and achieve the vision of the scholarship scheme.

Construction of the 400 megawatts hydropower dam began in 2007 at the initial cost of about 700m US dollars.

Seven communities with a total population of 1, 216 that were affected by the dam project have been resettled.

They have also been provided with social infrastructure like roads, schools, health clinics, electricity, potable water, markets and community centres among others.
