Mining companies produce fish in old pits

Takoradi, May 21, GNA - The Bogoso and Prestea Mining Companies will produce 10 tonnes of fresh Tilapia within the next three years. The Bogoso Mines using an old mine pit for a pilot fish farming project can produce 2.5 tonnes of fresh tilapia, Mr. Richard Hagan, Community, Safety and Environmental Manager told newsmen at a briefing at Takoradi on Friday.

He said fish stocks from the pond had been tested and proved safe for consumption.

Mr. Hagan said the company had plans to expand the fish farming projects and encourage more people living within its area of operation to adopt the technology.

He said the Seri-culture project introduced as an alternative livelihood option, was yielding results and that efforts were being made to sell silk to textile companies in Ghana.

Mr. Ahmed Nantogmah, Assistant Director in charge of Media Relations of the Chamber of Mines, said the Bogoso and Prestea companies were not ready to be list on the Ghana Stock Exchange (GSE).

He said the activity of galamsey operators on their concessions were creating a nuisance to the companies and appealed to the government to use the appropriate measures to eject them.

Mr. Samuel Agyeman, Underground Mine Manager said studies would be completed in June this year to ascertain the viability of the underground mines.

He said noted that even though there were some deposits underground; a lot of work had to be done before mining could begin.
