Dr. Mahama To Petition Parliament For Nkrumah Day

The leader of the People?s National Convention, Dr. Edward Mahama, is asking parliament to set a day aside to commemoration the birth of Dr. Kwame Nkrumah the first president of Ghana.

Speaking at the 33rd anniversary of the overthrow of Dr. Nkrumah, the PNC leader says the man who led Ghana to Independence deserves national recognition. The ceremony which took place at the Kwame Nkrumah Mausoleum in Accra brought together a host of Nkrumaists stalwarts from the Convention People?s Party, CPP, the People National Convention, PNC and some elements of the National Democratic Congress (NDC).

After delivering a series of speeches expounding on the ideologies of Kwame Nkrumah and its relevance in the 21st century, wreaths were laid a the tomb side of the late Osagyefo. The event was also used to highlight the merger of the two Nkrumaist parties CPP and PNC with leaders of the parties making joint appearances.

Dr. Mahama told the Nkrumahist fraternity who attended the ceremony that he intends to present a petition together with a million signatures to Parliament to back his request. He stated that all the party?s structures and all Nkrumahists will be asked to solicit for one million signatories. Leaders of the merged Nkrumahists parties are yet to determine the structure and name members of the party?s leadership. But officials say once that is done, the CPP will become the third force in Ghanaian politics.
