Industrial cities in Ghana that support the economy

The evolution and significant growth of Ghana’s economy over the years can largely be attributed to a relatively active industrial sector which offers a wide range of products and services within the country.

With the help of a stable macro-economic environment, industrialization has led to increased investment in the economy thereby making Ghana a destination for foreign investors.

Dominated by agro-industries and many medium-sized companies, subsidiaries of multinational companies such as Unilever, Coca Cola, Toyota and Accra Brewery also have a strong presence in the country.

There are also major industries including mining, light manufacturing, aluminium smelting, food processing, cement, food and beverages production, textiles, chemicals, pharmaceuticals, the processing of metals and wood products.

We take a look at some towns and cities serving as commercial hubs for these major companies as Africa marks Industrialization Day.

TEMA

Tema is an industrial town with several industries including the steel processing companies, oil refineries, food and beverage processing, fish processing industry, aluminium industries just to mention a few. The Tema Oil Refinery, Unilever Ghana, Nestle Ghana LTD among others are a few notable ones among the lot in the area. The commercial harbour is also an important aspect of the city as it is the largest income earner for the town. There is also a fishing harbour constructed with the aim of accommodating relatively larger fishing vessels including the deep-sea carriers and trawlers which have the capacity to accommodate almost 60 tons of fish.

Abossey Okai

Located in the capital city of Accra, “Abossey Okai” is noted for the sale of a wide collection of auto parts and accessories.

Suame Magazine

With a working population of over 200,000 and approximately 12,000 shop-owning proprietors, mainly engaged in vehicle repairs and metal engineering, Suame Magazine is an industrialized area located in Kumasi, Ashanti region. It is also referred to as one of the most industrialized zones in Ghana and in Africa

North Kaneshie

This is an area in Accra, noted for its industrial and commercial activities. Characterized by a number of factories, the town provides a visible imprint of flourishing heavy industries such as Promasidor Ghana, Plastic product companies, Picadilly biscuits ltd and many others

Channayili (Tamale Industrial Park)

Located in Tamale, the Northern Region of Ghana, the Park is noted for industrial activities such as metal engineering, smock weaving, shea butter production among others.
