Asante-Apeatu’s sack could affect morale of police officers – Analyst

Security Analyst and CEO of Security Warehouse Limited, Adams Bonaa is curious about the dismissal of Inspector General of Police (IGP) saying it could send a negative signal to Ghanaian cops.

Mr. David Asante-Apeatu was sacked on Monday by President Akufo-Addo albeit he had some time to finish his contract.

His deputy, James Oppong-Boanuh was directed by the president to act as IGP.

Several theories are being propagated about what could have angered the President to ask Mr. Asante-Appeatu, who is due for retirement in 24 days, to vacate post with immediate effect.

While some suspect he may have refused to carry out unprofessional directives on behalf of the ruling party, others are linking this to the voluntary retirement of his Executive Secretary, Superintendent Peter Lanchene Tuubo, who now wants become a member of Parliament on the ticket of the opposition NDC in the Wa West Constituency.

But Adams Bonah says he is convinced the development is sending a bad signal to the entire Police Service and could seriously affect morale.

Bonah fears for a confidant of the President to be axed in such a disgraceful manner, other appointees at sensitive positions could be subject for manipulation, adding that the development will have some consequences on the output of the security personnel in the Ghana Police Service.

Political IGP

Meanwhile, General Secretary of the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC), Johnson Asiedu Nketiah believes the Acting IGP, James Oppong-Boanuh will not have the free-hand to operate effectively in his new office.

He told Accra-based Kasapa FM, Mr. Oppong- Boanuh will be manipulated by the Akufo-Addo government to do their bidding was done to his predecessor, Asante-Apeatu.

“The political machinations has been the problem of our professional Policemen to work effectively. I know Oppong-Boanuh very well. He can work very well, but I doubt it because I can predict that what Appietu went through he would suffer the same thing,” he added.
