Parade to mark 48th Independence celebration

Accra, Feb. 25, GNA - The climax of the 48th Independence anniversary celebration would be a colourful parade of security services and school children at the Independence Square on March 6. A release from the Ministry of Information and signed by V.T. Kuzume, Chief Director, said the President's Independence Day Award ceremony would be held on Saturday, March 5 at the forecourt of the State House.

During the ceremony winners of the school debates and students who distinguished themselves in academic and other endeavours would be given awards by President john Agyekum Kufuor.

The celebration under the theme: "Sustaining Democracy in Ghana - The Bedrock for Peace and National Unity", would begin with Muslim prayers on Friday, March 4.

The statement said that on Saturday, February 26, there would be special Church services in all SDA churches, followed on Sunday, February 27 by Christian Thanksgiving Services in all churches. The celebration continues on Monday, February 28 with the Veterans Parade at the Cenotaph, Osu, in Accra.

The official celebration end on Monday, March 7 with a Military Open Day to the general public.

The National Celebrations Planning Committee said it expected that similar activities would be organized in all Regions and Districts.
