The Ho Local Branch of the Ghana Government Pensioners’ Association (GGPA) has appealed to government to restore Senior Citizens Day, July 01, also known as Republic Day as a statutory public holiday.

In a press release signed by Reverend Professor William Opare, Chairman of the Association, said it was surprised that the Day, which was the only "Day and Time" that government solidarized with the elderly has been cancelled.

The release said the Day afforded the pensioners who were the Senior Citizens the opportunity to table the myriad of challenges confronting them before government for amicable solutions and asked government to reconsider its restoration.

The release said, “life for the Ghana Government Pensioners is very unbearable and hard to live”, especially for cap 30 members who received GHC 30.00 monthly as pension allowance and asked government to increase it to an appreciable level to reduce their plights.

It said “utility and medical bills are also astronomically high” and urged government to “consider some form of relief for pensioners.”
