First Lady makes donations to health institutions

Rebecca Akufo-Addo, First Lady of Ghana Rebecca Akufo-Addo, First Lady of Ghana

The First Lady, Mrs Rebecca Akufo-Addo, on Tuesday, presented assorted medical equipment and hospital disposables to selected health institutions, constituencies and Municipal Assemblies across the country to help improve their service delivery.

The beneficiary institutions were presented with several hospital beds, wheelchairs, ultrasound machines, microscopes, defibrillators, incubators, microwave ovens, refrigerators, tables, chairs, cabinets, and a lung machine for the National Cardiothoracic Centre at the Korle-Bu Teaching Hospital.

Mrs Akufo-Addo who is also the Executive Director of The Rebecca Foundation, in a brief statement prior to the presentation, explained that the distribution of the equipment and other support, was based on requests for emergency assistance received from the beneficiary institutions, to augment their inadequate and obsolete medical equipment.

She expressed the hope that the support would enhance health care delivery in the beneficiary institutions.

She urged corporate institutions and Non-Governmental Organisations to support the government’s effort to re-equip health facilities across the country by making conscious effort to seek the needs of health facilities especially, in rural communities and extend their benevolence to them.

She noted that, while some well-to-do in big cities could access all manner of health service deliveries at any time, it was always heart-wrenching to witness the passing of another, because of the lack of hospital beds, incubators, or some otherwise basic hospital equipment.

The First Lady said it was her motivation to procure and distribute the equipment.

The beneficiary institutions included; the Wenchi, Savelugu, and, Shai Osudoku Municipal Assemblies respectively; the Obuasi West, Dormaa West, Okaikoi Central, Upper Akim, Fanteakwa south and Atiwa West Constituencies respectively; the Adentan Municipal Health Directorate, Techiman Holy Family Government Hospital and the National Cardiothoracic Centre, at the Korle-Bu Teaching Hospital.

Mr Kofi Okyere-Agyekum, the Member of Parliament for the Fanteakwa South Constituency, thanked Mrs Akufo-Addo and the Rebecca Foundation for the kind gesture.

He said they were elated that the First Lady and her Organisation turned their focus to “smaller” health institutions in relatively remote areas to offer assistance.

Mr Okyere-Agyakum charged the recipient institutions to use the donated equipment with care to ensure their longevity and optimum use for their intended beneficiaries.
