A former flagbearer hopeful of the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC), Sylvester Mensah, has urged the Police to be professional in its dealings and not kowtow to political will, ABC News Ghana can report.

Sylvester Mensah is asking the Police Service to desist from acting as ‘political puppets’ at the expense of their professional work.

His comments come on the back of the arrest and subsequent release of the NDC’s National Chairman, Samuel Ofosu Ampofo, on Tuesday, June 11, 2019 over his alleged role in recent arson attacks and kidnappings in the country.

Speaking on Accra based Citi FM, Mr. Mensah said that the security agencies in Ghana should channel their efforts at finding the actual perpetrators of the said crimes and not intimidate innocent citizens of the land.

“ Mr. Ofosu Ampofo is not a kidnapper. I think the police are looking at the wrong way and its a political gaze they are giving. It is unfortunate that we have allowed a professional body to degenerate into a political institution. The whole thing looks like a huge joke. Those who are kidnapping our ladies are all out there and we are looking at the wrong direction – the Chairman of the leading opposition party as the one involved in the kidnapping of our girls. But, this is how low our politics is sinking. It is unimaginable and laughable. It is very unfortunate and this is where we are today. Ghanaians can all see what is happening”, he said.

Mr. Mensah also believes Mr.Ofosu Ampofo is innocent and further described the police’s action as ‘unimaginable and laughable’, adding that it is time the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) took serious steps regarding the matter.
