The National Road Safety Commission and organisers of the Ghana Driver and Road Safety Awards (GDRSA) have paid a courtesy call on officials of oil giant GOIL and GHACEM as part of the 5th UN Global Road Safety Awareness Week.

The courtesy call was made to the two companies for their exemplary efforts at helping educate drivers and reduce road accidents in the country and especially, for their kind support to the Ghana Driver and Road Safety Awards 2018.

The Group Chief Executive Officer of GOIL, Mr. Patrick Akorli, lauded the efforts of the organisers of the Ghana Driver and Road Safety Awards and urged drivers to be safety minded when they sit behind their steering wheels. He expressed confidence in the effect of praise and recognition in influencing human behaviour positively and urged the organisers to expand the reach of the awards.

The Finance Director of Ghacem, Mr. Dominik Michel who stood in for the Managing Director, said Ghacem was very happy to be part of the Awards initiative, and that its record of supporting Road Safety in Ghana spans over a decade. Mr. Michel said this year will be no exception, as Ghacem is committed and will be part of this year's Ghana Driver and Road Safety Awards, because it will ensure safety on our roads and save lives.

Moses Osei, who emerged as winner of a brand-new Suzuki Alto vehicle last year, thanked the organisers for instituting such an initiative to reward drivers for good driving behaviour. He pledged to be an ambassador of road safety and to influence his colleague drivers positively.

Florence Marfo, a VIP bus driver who won the Best Driver award in the Intercity category last year, urged more women to take inspiration from her example and join the driving profession. She remarked that more women in commercial driving will help improve safety on our roads as women tend to be more careful and considerate.

The launch of the 2019 Ghana Drivers and Road Safety Awards will take place at the Obra Spot on June 18th.

Ms. Freda Frimpong, Director of Partnerships of the Ghana Driver and Road Safety Awards Foundation, reiterated the goal of the awards scheme which is to raise champions of road safety and driving excellence at lorry stations and companies across the country. She added that this year’s programme will travel through various commercial transport stations in the country to refresh the knowledge on road signs, defensive driving techniques, and also to screen their eyes. She ended by inviting corporate Ghana to support the awards.
