Akufo-Addo’s silence on import of deadly pump-action guns worrying – Sam Pee Yalley

Former Ghanaian Ambassador to India says the President, Nana Akufo Addo’s silence on the importation of a cache of sophisticated weapons into the country recently raises more suspicion, especially after the bitter Ayawaso West Wuogon election violence.

According to Ambassador Sam Pee Yalley, as Commander in Chief of the Ghana Armed Forces, Nana Akufo Addo failed his responsibility to seize the consignment for further interrogation because the type of weapons brought in by the unknown importer cannot be meant for hunting or self-defense.

Ambassador Yalley who is also the President of the NDC Professionals Forum noted with concern the heightening tension in the country and insecurity in the country, something he fears could degenerate into an explosion if the public remains silent.

News about the container full of the firearms went viral attracting media personnel and some security capos to the Tema Port last week. The offensive weapons include AK 47 assault rifles, pump action guns with magazines, pump action without magazines, automatic pistol grips and pact pump action. The 1,575 shotguns and pop actions all use the same ammunition with 12 gauges.

Ambassador Sam Pee Yalley who was speaking to Mugabe Masse on ‘Inside Politics on Power 97.9 FM said the import must be thoroughly investigated and the whereabouts of the guns must be made public.

Yesterday, the largest opposition party, NDC issued a statement raising alarm has further fuelled tension and panic among Ghanaians.

Director of Communications, Kakra Essamuah, who signed the statement, noted that permits for such imports are granted by the Interior Ministry and bring them in at a time of emerging security threats such as terrorism, contract killings and vigilantism are dealt with, is very disturbing.

Head of Preventive of the Customs Division of the GRA, Joseph Oppong Aboagye is, however, allaying fears and says the guns came in through due process.
