Volta separatist movement recruited, trained ‘militia’ – Police

ABC News Ghana can report of emerging details following the arrest of some eight(8) persons arrested by the Ghana Police Service for attempting to secede from Ghana.

The eight are alleged to have plotted, recruited and trained people in ‘militia style’ even as they generated a national emblem, constitution and anthem in readiness for a declaration of their independence on Thursday May 9, 2019.

The Ghana Police Service in a press release issued and signed by ASP Simon Tenkuu on behalf of the Director-General in charge of Public Affairs revealed “Activities of the group also included illegally recruiting and training young people in a ‘militia style’ for them to form the core of their supposed country’s armed forces and police service.”

The press release copied to ABC News Ghana further stated that the core activities of the trained ‘militia’ was to provide security in the form of army or police personnel for the supposed country to be created.

The group, per information gathered by ABC News Ghana, is committed to seceding from Ghana and declaring independence for a ‘country’ known as the Western Togoland.

ABC News Ghana can confirm that these form the basis for the arrest and interrogation of the eight people, led by an 80-year-old man.
The supposed leader of the group, 80-year-old Charles Kormi Kudzodzi was arrested with seven others on Sunday, May 5 2019 at a meeting by the group to finalize arrangements for the declaration of Western Togoland.

The leadership of the Homeland Study Group foundation were earlier in March 2017 arrested for attempting to secede from Ghana.

They were charged with treason but were later discharged with a warning.
