Esther Ocloo Foundation holds memorial service

The Dr Esther Ocloo “Esther Foundation” has organised a memorial service in memory of the late industrialist to celebrate her centenary. She was born in 1919 and died in 2002.

The Foundation also donated an undisclosed amount of money to Achimota Senior High School as part of the activities.

Mr Ernest Afriyie, board member of Nkulenu Industry Limited presenting the money to the authorities of the School said the money should be used to develop the Home Economics Department.

He said Dr Esther Ocloo did a course in home economics from 1936 to 1940 at the Achimota School, adding that she learnt how to do all the products Nkulenu Industry produces from the department “so I believe that if much resources are invested to make the department a better one it would produce more entrepreneurs like Dr Ocloo”.

Mrs Vincentia Canacoo the daughter of Dr Esther Ocloo described her mother as a very had working woman considering the fact that she started her business with ten shillings.

She said her mother’s goal was to help people to succeed so she mobilized the community to form the Association of Ghanaian Industries and campaigned for the patronage of made in Ghana goods in her time.

Mrs Canacoo said the late Dr Ocloo was so passionate about arts so she formed the Aid to Artisans to support artists and through her love for the empowerment of women.

The Reverend G. K. Osiakwa, District Pastor of Evangelical Presbyterian Church Ghana at the Trinity Parish in Madina said even though Mrs. Ocloo was a food scientist and human resource specialist, her faith in Christ was phenomenal.

“She helped in the introduction of the Churches not only in Accra but in the Ashanti and Central Regions,” he said.

Rev. Osiakwa said the Trinity Parish in Madina which was the first EP church in Ghana started in the house of Mrs Ocloo and she was very instrumental in the women Bible class where women learnt to read the Bible.
