National Commission on Culture pays salaries of staff who don't work – Director laments

Executive Director for the National Commission on Culture at the Ministry of Tourism and Creative Arts, Janet Edna Nyame has expressed disappointment at government’s posture at funding her outfit.

She disclosed that the Commission on Culture is poorly resourced despite the constant payment of salaries at the end of every month.

Madam Edna Nyame noted that the situation was a very disturbing one especially since it was imitated across the country.

“…Last year I had the opportunity to go round the whole country to visit the centres and met all the district officers as well. Their reactions were so bad… they complained that they receive salaries but they don’t have money to work.

The Executive Director for the National Commission on Culture appeared before the Public Accounts Committee on Wednesday to respond to questions about her outfit contained in the Auditor General’s report.

Describing the circumstance as the major challenge of her outfit, she proposed that the government quickly come to the aid of the commission in order for her outfit to perform their mandate.

“…We need to do something hurriedly so that at least these centres can function as they’re supposed to.”

She commended some of the District Chief Executives whom she stated were understanding and offered to help each time they drew up their budgets but was quick to add that it was not replicated nationwide.
