It is callous to send wee smokers to jail - MP

MP for Bulisa North Constituency, James Agalga MP for Bulisa North Constituency, James Agalga

The member of Parliament for Bulisa North Constituency in the Upper East Region James Agalga has stated that it is very ruthless and callous for weed smokers to be imprisoned.

According to the member of Parliament, people addicted to this hard substance are to be well catered for rather than being confined to prison.

The member of Parliament who is also a Ranking Member for the Select Committee on Defence and Interior added that giving jail sentence to weed smokers would not solve the problem but will only make it worse.

“Evidence shows that those, who are incarcerated tend to smoke even more upon their release because they are addicted".

"They are sick and even whiles in prison they try to find ways and means of getting the substance to smoke. So, it is clear the arrest and prosecution of drug addicts is not the way to go.”, James Agalga stated.

James Agalga also sent a passionate appeal to parliament to decriminalize the use of marijuana by passing the Narcotics Control Commission Bill into law.

He is of the view that when the Bill is passed into law, it will help the Narcotic Control Board fight illegal drugs in the country

This statement by the Member of Parliament comes after some celebrities like Samini, Kwaw Kese, Rocky Dawuni and several others called for the legalization of marijuana.

According to them, legalizing the drug can generate huge income for the country as other countries are benefiting from that.
