Accra Harbour To Be Restored

What used to be known as the James Town Fishing Harbour in Accra, formerly the nerve-centre of fishing and other commercial activities in the colonial days, is to undergo a major development at the cost of 800,000 dollars.

It will have a fish market as well as a market for handicraft, a cold store, a warehouse, and a modern car park.

An interesting dimension to the project is the provision of a hovercraft to convey passengers from Accra to Tema by sea.

There will also be a fish restaurant that would be encouraged to use the different species of Ghanaian fishes in the preparation of dishes to attract tourists.

Davis Takyi-Mills, project co-ordinator of the Ministry of Tourism and Modernization of the Capital City, who disclosed this to the paper, said the project, which is part of Accra Beautification Project, is expected to begin next month and is scheduled to be completed in six months. He said it would be financed through the HIPC Fund.

Mr Takyi-Mills disclosed that tenders for the project had already been received and a contractor would be selected to start work before the end of this month.

He said the rejuvenation of the harbour would promote tourism in the country and also provide jobs for the people in line with the government?s desire to reduce unemployment in the country.
