Education minister calls for suspension of PTA dues

The minister of education, Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh, has called for an examination of the collection of Parents Teacher Association (PTA) dues.

According to a report by Modernghana.com, he argued that the continuous payment of dues without any proper impact on learning and demand for accountability appears not to make sense.

He therefore urged the Parents Teachers Associations (PTAs) within Ghana’s educational system to shift their focus from dues collection to demanding accountability from the schools on the quality of education and their learning outcomes.

He made the appeal on Friday, March 15, 2019, when he met with national executives of PTAs in his office in Accra.

He bemoaned, “Sadly, PTA has now become synonymous to money collection and this should not be the case.”

Earlier today, I attended the 3rd graduation ceremony of the Takoradi Technical University, where I represented President Akufo-Addo. It was my pleasure to inaugurate the new 800-bed University Hall on campus ahead of the ceremony. Work on other infrastructure projects is progressing steadily. I was delighted to announce that government has secured a $100m facility from AVIC Exim for infrastructure upgrade, equipment and training in our polytechnics, technical institutes and technical universities, and I recalled the recent installation of various laboratories not only at Takoradi Technical University but in sister institutions across the country. I also reiterated government’s commitment to ensuring that our institutions in the technical and vocational sector are properly tooled because the government places a high premium on the skills sector as an important pedestal for the nation’s socio-economic growth. I wish all the well in their future endeavours and hope they will be able to put to use the skills they have gained during their studies at the university
