Mayor Sowah joins students in Accra to strike for climate action

The Mayor of Accra, Hon Mohammed Adjei Sowah, Friday 15th March, 2019 joined thousands of students across 100 countries around the globe in a campaign to demand for urgent action on the growing climate crisis.

The campaigns were inspired by 16-year-old Swedish activist Greta Thunberg, who began holding solitary demonstrations outside the Swedish parliament in February last year.

The Mayor in a remark said the President of Ghana, His Excellency Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo in his recent state of the nation address to parliament announced plans to roll out renewable energy in the seat of government and all public building .

He expressed the city’s commitment to address issues relating to climate change adding that, the city of Accra had engaged in energy-efficient projects, promoting effective waste management including waste segregation, recycling as well as tree planting and awareness creation among vulnerable communities.

He disclosed that the city of Accra has committed to deadline 2020 as part of its commitment to C40 Climate Leadership Group to develop a Climate Action Plan for the city which will be compatible with the Paris Agreement.
