Home-based Carrier: Window opened for Ghanaian investors - Kofi Adda

The Aviation Ministry is bent on revamping local airline operations by sourcing aircraft for home-based carrier hence has called on interested Ghanaian investors to join in the fortune.

Sector Minister, Joseph Kofi Adda dropped the hint in an interaction with the media after he announced that Ghana will continue to partner Ethiopian Airlines despite the disaster which occurred on Sunday.

Joseph Kofi Adda, reiterated that Ethiopian Airlines has one of the best managerial airlines with many years’ experience hence there was no need to back out despite the unfortunate incident that occurred over the weekend.

He explained that Ghana is exploring the option of sourcing aircraft from other countries around the world in terms of structure, shareholding, fleet capacity, and routes among others for the new flag carrier.

“The foreign ones are coming from all over the world. From the UK, USA, Germany, Asia, Middle East. From even other African countries. We’ve been talking to many of them. Some have pledged amounts on what they want to put in.”

“The rest of it will have Ghanaian investors, institution investors, private individuals, and companies from the Ghanaian side.” He disclosed.

Additionally, he assured that government will not take up more than 10 percent in the yet-to-be established new national air carrier, emphasizing that the government is careful not to repeat the mistakes of the past.



He cited abuses, poor planning and misapplication, among others, as some of the lessons, adding: “We lost so much money running Ghana Airways and Ghana International Airlines but that won’t happen again.”

In his words, “The 10% holdings of government is golden shares simply because it is our flag and this is going to be our hub. So it is limited to the state.”



The Aviation Minister, has meanwhile expressed his condolences to his Ethiopian counterpart and the families of the victims who perished in the "unfortunate incident."
