Communications Minister Mrs Ursula Owusu Ekuful has been recognised at this year’s Mobile World Congress (MWC) held in Barcelona.

She was acknowledged for spearheading Huawei Technologies Co., Ltd.’s Rural Star project, the first in the world and started in Ghana in collaboration with the Ghana Investment Fund For Electronic Communications (GIFEC).

The RuralStar project aimed at providing internet connectivity to some 5 million Ghanaians sparsely scattered throughout many remote areas with little or no access to internet.

The RuralStar project uses a Relay based on 4G technology to realise data transmission, rather than expensive satellite or microwave. Relay transmission does not have the same line of sight (LOS) constraints, allowing a base station to be constructed on a simple wooden telegraph pole instead of a 30m dedicated tower. With low power consumption, RuralStar can be powered just by using six solar panels.

MWC Barcelona

The MWC is the largest mobile event in the world, bringing together the latest innovations and leading-edge technology from more than 2,400 leading companies, with a highly-rated conference programme assembling today’s visionaries to explore the hottest topics influencing the industry.

The event featured extensive learning opportunities from dozens of partner-led programmes, GSMA seminars, summits and more.

The theme of this year’s event is ‘Intelligent Connectivity’ – the term used to describe the powerful combination of flexible, high-speed 5G networks, the Internet of Things (IoT), artificial intelligence (AI) and big data.
