Dzorwulu Footbridge: A disaster in waiting

Danger is looming on the N1 Highway as the Dzorwulu footbridge has developed major cracks and faults.

The middle beam of the bridge has shifted and tilted the heavy concrete structure.

According to pedestrians, the beam shifted when an overloaded heavy-duty truck rammed it.

Pedestrians are now afraid of using the footbridge, fearing a possible disaster. Consequently, some of them have resorted to crossing the six-lane highway from one side to the other, a situation which could result in pedestrian knockdowns just as has been happening on the Lapaz stretch of the same highway.

Apart from the defective footbridge, there is also a huge dent in the innermost lane of the Achimota Overhead-Lapaz side of the road, which poses danger to motorists, especially those who are not familiar with that stretch.

Since the N1 highway was opened to motorists in February 2012, a lot of pedestrians have been knocked down due to the lack of vantage footbridges on the stretch.

Last year, the government announced that three more footbridges would be constructed on the stretch to mitigate the knockdowns.

Some of the pedestrians say the bridge requires urgent attention before it collapses.
