SEC holds conferences to mark 20th anniversary

The Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) will hold the third Capital Market Conference on the theme: "Ghana Beyond Aid: The Role of the Capital Market," to mark its 20th anniversary.

Mr Emmanuel Ashong-Katai, SEC Head of Policy, Research and IT, SEC in an interview with the Ghana News Agency in Accra on Thursday, said the Commission believed that Ghana Beyond Aid can only work when the capital market was used to raise capital for infrastructure development, industrialization and wealth creation.

He said the conference objectives was to undertake assessment and review the performance of SEC as a regulator of the country's capital market; and to generate, sustain public, and investors interest in the securities industry.

Speakers for the conference are Mr Ken Ofori Atta, the Minister of Finance, Dr Ernest Addison, the Governor of Bank of Ghana and Dr Kester Quist Alphetsi, Lecturer Ghana Telecom University College.

Discussants are: Mr Seth Terkper, Former Minister of Finance, Dr Sam Mensah, Dr Nii Kwaku Sowa, Mrs Eudora Koranteng, and Dr Adu Anane Antwi, all past Directors- General of SEC; Mr Samuel Atta Akyea, Minister of Works and Housing, Dr Mohammed Awal Ibrahim, the Minister for Business Development, among others.

The topics to be discussed are investor Protection, Regulation and Development of the Capital Market: Challenges and Opportunities, Financing Ghana's Agriculture: How Viable is the Commodities Exchange and Warehouse Receipts System.

Other topics include Corporate Governance: The Archilles Heels to Financial Market Regulations, Stability in Ghana and Financing SMEs: Leveraging the Capital Market and Fintech and Crypto Currencies: Is it Betting or Investing.
