Ajumako Assembly supports 90 PwDs

Some beneficiaries received start-up capital while others received income-generating materials

The District Chief Executive (DCE) for Ajumako Enyan Essiam in the Central Region, Rev. Ransford Kwesi Nyarko has admonished beneficiaries of the Disability Fund under the District Assembly Common Fund, to invest the money they receive as support.

The DCE gave the advice at a ceremony to present some 90 Persons Living with Disability (PWDs) in the area, with various items.

Rev. Nyarko said a monitoring and evolution team will visit beneficiaries to ensure that the money given them is put to good use.

For his party, president of the Federation of People with Disability, Mr. Isaac Eshun, expressed his frustrations at the challenges they go through when looking for a job.

"We have intellectual ability to do lots of things to help develop the country but people always shun our company in public," he lamented.

Some beneficiaries received start-up capital, while others, especially those in special schools, had their fees paid.

Others also received income-generating materials and appliances to start a trade.

Social Welfare Officer, Abena Serwah Opare, indicated that the donation of white canes, wheelchairs and other devices to PwDs, in addition to the workshops organised for them, is to make their lives meaningful.

The Chairman of the Social Services Committee of the Assembly, Mr. Noah Danso, said the legislation governing the use of the Disability Fund, clearly stipulates that it should support income-generating activities and also used for educating PWDs.

He said even though hearing-impaired and visually-impaired students are exempted from paying fees, there is the need to support their upkeep in order to keep them in school.

According to him, three students of the University of Ghana, University of Education, Winneba; and the University of Cape Coast, are being supported periodically with tuition fees.

Mr. Danso said as part of plans to ensure an effective administration system at the association’s office, a laptop computer and a colour printer have been provided to help them print their own ID cards and other administrative letters.
